Crown swapping
Hey eveyone!
I have a delimma and I need some help. I have a '95 GT Aggressor. Yes, it is old but in good condition due to being in storage for some time, and truthfully it is all I have. Some time ago the shock tubes failed and broke off completely @ the crown. GT had a replacement program out but after calling the manufactorer I was told due to change of ownership GT is no longer honoring replacement of the defective fork.
I have found out that the 1" steering tube fork is a tough find, so my question is is it possible to buy a 1" crown providing I ever found one and use it on a 1 1/8th" fork? I do not mind swapping over to a threadless at all, in fact it is perferred.
Any suggestions will be welcomed!
Thanks!

CPSC, GT Bicycles Announce Repair Program For Bicycle Forks
WASHINGTON, DC - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), GT Bicycles Inc. of Santa Ana, Calif., is announcing an inspection and repair program for the forks on all 1995 GT "Aggressor" model bicycles. This inspection program affects approximately 4,000 bicycles, which are equipped with forks made by Polygon Industries, Inc. of Taiwan, R.O.C. The forks could break during use causing the rider to lose control of the bicycle and fall.
CPSC is aware of 13 incidents in which bolts in the bicycles loosened, causing the bicycle forks to break. Although no serious injuries have been reported, the potential for injury is significant.
One thousand GT-authorized retailers sold the bicycles nationwide between October 1994 and March 1995 for about $400.00. The bicycles, which have either a bright blue or candy red finish with "Aggressor" written on the frame, sold in adult sizes from 14 1/2 inches to 22 inches.
CPSC and GT Bicycles are instructing consumers to stop using their 1995 GT "Aggressor" bikes and bring them to any authorized GT Bicycles dealer for a free inspection. Dealers will inspect the bicycles, tighten any loose bolts, and replace damaged forks at no cost to the consumer.
For more information, consumers can call GT Bicycles at (800) 743-3248.

Grim. I've heard that Tange chrome 1" forks can be had pretty readily. As below:

I may have to go to a rigid fork although I wanted a suspension fork. If I cannot find one easily/cheaply I may buy a decent pawn shop beater and swap components.
I am going to try the (301) # at the top of this announcement to see if I can get anywhere w/ that.
I didn't think the crown swapping would go over easily. It was a stab in the dark.
Thanks!
EDIT:
I just called the Office Of Consumer Affairs and explained my situation and that I contacted GT concerning this and they had refused to honor the recall. I wqas told that GT should honor the recall as recalls are permenent and do not expire. My contact info was taken and I was told to wait about a week and if I haven't heard anything I should contact the (301) # once again.

I found this during my initail search. I called the 800 # to GT and was told by a company Rep that they would not honor the repair program. I didn't see the Phone # at the top of the announcement.

You're very welcome I've experienced a similar issue years ago and found that NO company likes Consumer Affairs Legal Dept. on them.
Let us know what happens.
