    Help! Creaking in Top Tube?

    Hi! (new here, obviously)

I have a new (150 mi) carbon frame that has developed a creak in the top tube about 5cm behind the headset. The frame was never crashed or damaged, nor are there any signs of trauma anywhere near the top tube / headset – or anywhere else for that matter.

If I hold the down-tube and push or pull on the top-tube (holding in center of top tube), I can hear and feel a creaking in the top tube. This is replicated 100% of the time with light pressure, but much less pressure needed when push or pull from left side of the bike. It doesn’t sound good, but/so how big of an issue is this? Nuisance or structural/safety concern? What to do next?

    Thanks!

(I can’t easily pop-in to the (not so)LBS/dealer where I bought the bike, since I drove to DE to save some $$$ by capitalizing on the best price I could find and the 0% sales tax.)

Wow, that is strange. At first read, I thought it was probably your stem/bar combo, but from the centers of the TT/DT? What brand frame is it? This info will let us know if it is a true monocoque or bonded construction. My money is on the headset races that (may be) pressed into the frame are making the noise, but??? Also, for a warranty, you may not need to go all the way back to the shop at which you bought it if there is a dealer near you. I understand driving to save bucks, but is it available near you also?

Doesn't mean anything. It could still be coming from elsewhere on the bike

Absolutely, I agree. A little more information will help though.

As for warranty – I figured/hoped that I could go to the LBS up the street, but I wasn’t sure if this is that big of a problem…yet.

As for creak coming from somewhere else – What’s the best way to determine/pin-point the creak, aside from isolating the frame from components one by one? Also, I’m fairly certain (99% - was 100% until I read your post) that the noise is in/from the TT.

My biggest concern was if this is or could be a major issue warranting me to curb the bike until further notice.

    Thanks!

    Thanks!

I broke it down and the creak in the TT was indeed coming from the headset. , again. Regardless, Iím glad it wasnít a problem so I can worry about going faster rather than the creaks and squeaks.
