Shimano 105 with older friction shifters..will it work?
I have an older road bike that has the old SunTour 7sp. derailleur setup. My question is, will a newer 105 derailleur work if I swap it out? It's not index shift...it's the dump friction shifters on the downtube. I was told it would work but wanted other opinions from people that would know. Thought this would be a good place to start.

Thanks for responding. I should have been more clear about that. My fault. Yes, it's the rear derailleur. I'm assuming I can keep the old SunTour front derailleur. The rear is toast and short of eBay, can't find the old SunTour cyclone whatever it is.. I was told you can use the short cage 105 rear and it can be adjusted to work just fine since I have friction shifters.

you can use any derailleur you want (just about) with friction shifters. For example, I'm using Suntour barcons, a Campy Veloce 9sp RD and a 7sp Shimano cassette. Works fine.
It's probably not worth replacing the Cyclone with another Cyclone anyway (except for nostalgia); most folks say that even cheap modern derailleurs are far superior to even the best older derailleurs. I have read that several places, but somebody correct me please if I'm wrong.

I did a similar swap to my brothers early 70's Takara 10 speed a few months ago. Somebody "munched" his SunTour Honor RD. I took a low end Shimano off of a RoadMaster (Wal mart bike) and everything worked well except chain length. The replacement DER was a longer cage then the SunTour and needed a few extra chain links. A new $6 xmart chain (which fortunately ended up the proper length out of the box) and he was back in business.
The swap went MUCH easier than I anticipated!
