Deore RD 8/9 with 105 brifters, 9spd cassette?

I'm trying to build up a road bike economically (for now) and got a good deal on a Deore RD and a set of 105 brifters. I'm guessing the Deore might be a MTB dérailleur (it is long cage) but would it work on my road setup?

Deore Rear D - 105 Shifters

Should work fine, I have a similar setup on my touring bike (Ultegra Shifters - Deore Rear D). The only time you will have a problem is if you try mixing certain SRAM components with Shimano as the actuation ratio is different.

It'll work. For the 9-speed cassette you'll need a 9-speed shifter.

The Nashbar ad said 8/9 speed compatibility. I like the Ultegra 9 speed RD (have one on another bike) but that'd be $35 more plus shipping. Total cost for Al frame bike w/carbon stays and fork but no wheelset is about $500. I'll share my Cane Creek wheelset w/Ultegra cassette from my Fuji commuter.

Shifter not dérailleur Sparky. Dérailleurs don't give a damn how many cogs you have, but if you want indexing you have to have the correct shifter to control it based on the brand and number of cassette cogs

Thanks for your reply - and I didn't mean offense by the "dérailleur" post.

Yes I was focused on dérailleur and not shifter ; though I'll bet some old-school RD don't have enough reach for 9 cogs.

When you start posting "blah blah ad copy said blah blah compatibility" in bold people will think you're blowing off good advice

Old derails will work

I have Deore XT derails orig. for 7spd that work fine with 9spd. As said, it's the shifter.

Remember MTB stuff was called touring stuff before MTBs came to life as we now know them.

I'm all for building a bike on the cheap, Good luck. At $500 for a bike less wheels, you might just want to try buying a complete bike. Visit the under $750 road bike thread in the Road Forum. Or if your skills are honed, buy a bike from Bikesdirect. You can usually get a decent bike from them if you're willing and able to set it up properly.

Thanks, it does add up. Oddly enough, it's a Mercier frame (from BikesDirect) that I"m building back up. With carbon fork and seat stays $500 isn't too bad. Since I ride only one bike at a time I figure I can share the wheelset. The other components are Ultegra and 105. I'm probably mounting the Deore RD on another bike for now because I just picked up a used 105 RD.
