For short errands, I don't carry anything. For longer, when I absolutely have to arrive at the destination, I take a kit, which, from my memory, contains: patch kit, tire levers, minipump, screwdriver w/reversible blade (flat+Philips), hexagonal key set, small adjustable wrench, mini universal pliers, chain tool, short run of chain + Powerlinks, shift & brake cables, flat wheel wrenches (never used so far on the road), tiny bottle w/Boeshield, a few disposable latex gloves. Recently, I started also carrying a spare tube but have not used it so far on the road. I might have missed an item or two, but the core should there. The gloves are pretty important if you need to get clean to your destination. Everything is packed into a Roadgear roll-up pouch (SL704):

Patch kit, levers, Topeak Alien (maybe the whole thing, usually just the half with the Allen keys), sometimes a tube, sometimes a CO2 cartridge & inflator, and a pump. I can squeeze various combinations of that stuff (except for the pump) into a medium Fizik clip bag.

A small Topeak Aero wedge containing a tube, patch kit, tire levers, multi tool, 2 CO2 cartridges, Micro-flate, photo ID, medical insurance card and a $20 bill.

I have a small Pedros bag - $2 cash, 1 tube, 1 lever, 1 CO2 cartridge with small head unit, Crank Bros tool ( I can't remember the name-smallest one they make), copy of my insurance card, 1 gu packet (in case I forget to put one in my jersey), 4 baby aspirin ( I have a heart condition ), if a long trip an atm card if I need food or a cab back home

In my jersey, never forget a cell phone.

Pretty similar except a full-size pump instead of the CO2 & the mini, a little more cash (this is L.A.) and my medical insurance card.

For longer rides or supermarket I carry back pack. Everything goes into back pack.


Otherwise I have:

frame mount pump with a hose (nothing else can cut it)
wedge bag behind the seat inside
pair of gloves to not get my hands dirty
a plastic publix bag to carry dirty things after fix
1 spare tube
1 patch kit
1 multi tool set


That's all I need really. Plus the water of course.


By the way, bike with my topeak road morph pump looks COOL. If anything my pump makes it cooler.



Also in my packets. My wallet, my cell phone, my big arse key set (door keys people). A pen, and some small stiky notes to write on. I wear baggy walmart jeans and roll them up.

You can also get dog tags. $8 on eBay. I'm waiting to find out my blood group before I can get those. Easier for medics to keep you alife if things go south.

Thanks for the ideas, all. As you might guess, I'm assembling a ride kit and had thought of some things, but there's lots of good info that you're passing along, here.

I've recently returned to cycling after being away awhile and have been doing some training rides most days, with absolutely nothing along except water, house key and cell phone. Realized this was dumb last week when a bad front-derailer shift left the chain wedged between sprockets and me with nothing to pry it out with except my house key. Luckily that worked!

About the levers...


Forgot to mention that I can take my tire off using my hands only. Althought my multi tool has levers, I don't ever use them. Easier to use my hands. But then again, I'm a bear. Rawr!


I use this bag. https://search.ebay.com/MOUNTAIN-BICY...Zm37QQfromZR40 It's cheap. Fits what I mentioned. Has bad velcro, but fixable with some flame. You'll know what to do if you get one. Others can be had for about the same money, look good on eBay. Note the size on mine. I could use a bigger one (to carry two or more tubes).


Bags and stuff you attach are stealable iteams. Don't spend money if you leave your bike. Instead carry everything in back pack.

Basically the same as everyone else, patch kit, multi-tool, pump, CO2 inflater and cartridge, plastic bag (pick up the dog doo when I walk my dog), wallet with some money and ID, condom (you never know) and if I am walking my dog, I bring a foldable bowl so she can drink some water.
