9 speed crank w/ 7 speed chain

I was wondering if it is possible to use a 9 speed crank with a 7 speed chain.

my current crank is fubar and I need an affordable replacement, and all I can find affordable are 9 speed cranks...

Assuming the rear is still 7 speed, you should be fine. The front chainrings are always a little narrow to accommodate the changing chainline anyway.
