Dura-Ace 7800 10speed hub problem

Hello all,
I just built up a complete set of dura-ace 7800 hubs. Then of course the worst thing happened - I found out that the 2007 model now accepts only the 10 speed cassette due to the taller splines.
I am figuring i will have to unlace and return the hubs as I have no intention of overhauling the shifters on the bike - or buying the expensive cassette - I know..I am still kicking myself, I just didn't know this was the case.

So my question... has anyone come across some 9-speed cassettes from SRAM or anyone that fit on the 2007 model Dura-ACE 7800 splines?
Any help would be appreciated!

Good luck returning them... the hubs have been laced up, most stores wont take them back.

One way to solve you problem would be to grind the cassette cogs to fit the taller splines. I've actually have done this for a customer that still had 9 speed with a 10speed wheel.

yeah, I figured as much - as the day has wore on I have decided that I will either get lucky and find a compatible 9-speed cassette (rather unlikely I imagine) or just find someone who wants to buy the wheel-set (that is my most likely option I imagine). Mistakes like these (building a wheel with unfamiliar components before checking the cassette's compatibility) are useful lessons, and good wheel-building practice too .........

The upgrade to 10 speed isn't that bad. With Shimano all you should need is brifters, cassette and chain. While DA is expensive, Ultegra and 105 aren't too pricey. Good luck

Yeah - if it was my bicycle I would be doing that I think, the problem though is that it is for a good friend's bike. He relied on my suggestion (based on the fact that he wanted dura-ace hubs) and then I built the wheels for him - now they don't work with his setup and he really doesn't have the loot to change other parts, haha I feel real bad about it - I offered to buy them from him and think I will build a nice road bike around them in the coming months. Now I'm no the look out for some Dura-ace 7700 hubs to do his up right.

Thanks for the feedback though!

Sorry to hear that. Can you use 9 sp spacers and loose a cog? That might be the cheapest way.

you could but the top 3 cogs are always shuttled. and the 10speed specific hubs are 1 mm shorter than 8/9 bodies.

or wait... use a Jtek #2 shiftmate. You have to block off a gear but it will work.

How is it that my 10spd 105 cassette fits an old school Dura Ace FH-7402 uniglide? Back in the day that hub accepted 8 speed (maybe even 7 speeds). Are cogs just getting thinner with more gears?

So much for the myth of Shimano compatibility. The reason I dumped all my Campy 8 sp was because they didn't work with current 9/10 sp. Seems Shimano is going the planned obsolescence also.
