ticking noise in crankset or pedals maybe?

More about clicks in BB: I have bought a very-near-new road bike, Trek Pilot 2.1

Drivetrain=
SHIFTERS Shimano 105 STI, 10 speed
FRONT DERAILLEUR Shimano 105
REAR DERAILLEUR Shimano Ultegra
CRANKSET Shimano 105 50/39/30
CASSETTE Shimano 105 12-25, 10 speed
PEDALS Shimano 505, clipless

I took it for its first proper ride today, i noticed a ticking clicking (not really creaking) sound. It sounds like bottom bracket. I only notice it when giving it some gas, it doen't seem to do it with coasting or light pedalling. Can't say that it seems to happen at the same point of the cycle each time around either, but it does seem to tick about once per revolution. Sometimes its a couple of ticks in rapid succesion.

From reading the other threads, sounds like I need to maybe get a mechanic to tighten bottom bracket for me. Have just noticed it looks like previous owner tried to or has had the BB off, maybe trying to fix this himself? Anyway, my main worry is am I possibly doing damage if I keep riding it until it is ready for a first service? Or can I ride it for a few more weeks and book in for a service and get it looked at then?

I was about to post exactly the same problem. I just bought a discounted, "like new" entry level Jamis Coda. I like the bike but the clicketty-click is driving me nuts. Took it back to LBS and the guy claimed he couldn't hear anything. But I hear it in exactly the same way---only when I am engaging the gears. I hear it in every gear. It's not the chain against the front derailluer. Another LBS said it was likely the cheap bottom bracket, explaining that the Jamis is a good bike with passable components, but to keep entry level prices what they are, companies "cheap out on stuff you can't see" like the bottom bracket...

He he you must search for the post by Zoltani - who has the same problem on the same bike as you - a Jamis Coda!!!

I am going to keep my eye on that post see what the outcome is.

In the meantime, I don't think my bike has cheap components, but maybe it is a cheaply fitted BB. It sounds like after reading the sheldon brown article its the bottom bracket needs tightening. Just not too sure if I can get away with riding the bike between now and then.

Here is a cut and paste to the reply I posted on Zoltani...

This may sound kind of silly...but I don't know you and don't know your wrench expertise...so don't take offense....

But, here are things I would look at first...

1. Have you cleaned and oiled your chain lately? - A properly cleaned/oiled chain usually keeps most strange sounds to a minimum.

2. Have you checked for loose bolts where the crank arms attach?

3. Have you checked front deraileur clearance? You say it's a new bike...often, cables have a way of slipping, adjusting, stretching on their own....Do you hear it regardless of which chainring you're in? Big ring? small ring? How about compared with the cassette....only in the high gears? only in the low gears? Check your front deraileur clearance and make sure the chain has proper clearance...should be about 4 mm.

4. Is the clicking consistent? I mean do you hear the noise at the same spot within your crank rotation or can your crank arm be anywhere at anytime and you can hear the noise? One time, I had a clicking sound bugging me...turned out, it was my front deraileur cable end protruding into the path of my crank arm!

Without taking your BB apart, your only other option would be a radiograph if you happen to have access to an industrial radiography crew...he he he...I do....But then again, I highly doubt there was any damage done to the BB. A good indication of BB integrity would be to grab the cranks and try to move them left/right to see if there is any movement or if it feels "sloppy."

Hope this helps...Good Luck!

I had the same problem with my new Trek 7500fx. We meaning me and the lbs tried everything. It ended up being the seat post. I took the past off and ran finger around in side and found that it was grity so I cleaned the in side of the hole and the outside post and put a light coat of oil on the post. The sound is gone....

FYI...now solved, was not seat as it continued when I was out of the seat, I decided also was not the head either as i couldnt make the noise unless I was pedalling. So LBS had a test ride and took the cranks off and regreased and put everything back together again. Took about ten minutes. Its true. Love is a silent bike.
