I have a triple chain ring on my road bike. When I am on the second sprocket on the front and it doesn't really matter which sprocket in the rear...if I pedal at a steady 80-85 rpm I get a weird "ticking" noise. It's almost like everytime my right pedal hits the down stroke it produces a "ticking" noise. If I change the chain to the smaller or larger sprocket and pedal at 80-85 rpm it does not make this same noise, it makes no noise at all. Any ideas? Any suggestions?

I have ultegra components throughout. I don't really know or think it's anything bad, it just didn't use to make this noise. I like my bike to be "quiet" on the road.

I'd first tighten up the chain ring bolts. If that doesn't fix it, check for a loose pedal. Then check for a loose crank bolt. Then check for loose bottom bracket. Then check for loose pedal bearings.

And then if you still have the tick try lubing the ends of the saddle rails.

OK, we need to apply some logic here. Chainwheel bolts are possible but unlikely, or it would probably happen on the large chainwheel as well. Pedal and crank bolts are out - not specific to middle ring. It has to be in the chainwheel area as it is once per crank rev. I would look for something on the large chainwheel that is hitting the chain, or a problem on the teeth on the middle chainwheel.

Ok, I checked the chainring and chain. I'm not very knowledgable on this stuff, but could it have something to do w/ the bearings? I notice it only does it once I get at or above 90 rpm. It does it more if I am applying pressure/force on my pedaling stroke(s). If I shift to a lower gear and pedal faster than 90rpm it still does it, just not as bad as when I am pedaling hard.

Any ideas?

It's usually just a matter of patiently removing, cleaning,
re-lubricating, and re-torquing fasteners until it quiets down.

+1 Pedal (Left side)

I had or may be still having the same problem. I fond the right side bearing I cold unscrew by hand so I grease and torqued it properly. But it end up being the left pedal even so far. I cleaned and lubed the threads and torqued the pedal correctly. I will know after a few more rides.
