Shraeder to Presta Adapter

<rant> I must be loco for buying a crappy Performance brand "Loco" wheel but among the many problems it has, like noisy hub, broken spokes, weak rim, etc....the whole concept of drilling the rim for Shraeder then putting in a cheezy rubber adapter for presta tubes that falls off and gets lost every time you change a flat, totally escapes me. Why even bother with the dual use concept? If you run Shraeder tubes it is fine but I prefer Presta valves and carry a spare presta tube and have my pump set up for presta. Do they make a sturdy adapter for using presta valve inner tubes in rims drilled out for shraeder? The one that came with this wheel, much like the wheel itself, is a total p.o.s. /<rant>

I know this doesn't help, but could you stop being a valve snob and use schrader valves since your bike is made for them?

<Heretic talk> I just run my presta valve tube without any adapters directly in Shraeder drill rim. Never had any problem, never bother getting an adapter. </Heretic talk>

+1
Both have advantages as well as disadvantages. I tour and can be out for days or even weeks so being able to purchase tubes anywhere is a necessity. 27" tubes with Shrader valves are easy to find in all X-mart stores. They fit very well in 700c tires as well. It can be almost impossible to find a real bicycle shop with Presta tubes in Podunk or fly over country.

So...choosing presta makes one a bike snob? What about Kevlar beads versus wire? Perhaps you could publish an etiquette guide to keep us all from accidentally choosing the wrong thing and appearing snobbish.
Sheesh.

If you like running presta valves in rims drilled for schrader to make your rims a "universal donor" like I do, hit the local LBS and ask if they have any shouldered presta nuts...or look through any old tubes you may have as some tubes come stock with them.

Once you find some, hang onto them and use them on the next tube. As DanPT said, you can go commando, but I prefer the convenience of having my stem held by nuts.

You could return the p.o.s. wheel...

Yeah, I hate to say it, but most of Performance's house stuff really seems to suck. I do buy their tubes, they seem OK. If you otherwise loved the thing it might be different, but since it seems to not be doing anything right, you might just want to get a new wheel.

I have had no problems running presta valves in rims drilled for schraeder, but I have put a piece from an old tube over the presta valve, so it provides a bit of extra protection from the edge of the hole. I dont put more than 105 psi in my tires.
