Cantilever Roller/Pulley Bridge and brake centering?
Hi,
I've been seeing these roller-pulley brake bridge doo-dads on some vintage tourers... like the one on Ted Phelps's 83 Specialized Expedition (picture copied with permission from the bottom of the source page):

I see that Loose Screws stocks something they call a Dia Compe Cantilever Brake Bridge w/Roller which I assume is the same thing.
I've been thinking about adding something like this to my '84 Univega Gran Turismo, but I wondered if these things actually decrease braking performance. I noticed on the Harris site, that the more expensive yokes have screws to secure the bridge wire to "keep the brakes centered" ( harris yokes ).
I suppose, at worst, that I'd make an $8 mistake to try the roller bridges, but I wondered if anybody has any comments.
Thanks!

It looks to me as simply two different ways of keeping the bridge cables at equal lengths. They look like they both do this same task, and I doubt either will negativly impact braking performance.

Don't be a cheapskate. Get these:

Seriously, I have the Dia Compes on my Bridgestone. I think they may keep the brakes centered better, but I wouldn't swear to it.

I figure that with cantis, one arm is always going to make contact first, and the more efficient the bridge, the shorter the delay. I would guess that between-arm delay for the roller bridge would be largely dependent on the difference in spring tension between the two arms, and the between-arm delay for the fixed bridge would be largely dependent on the difference in wire length from the bridge to each arm. I just don't have a clue about which would be better.

I have them but I dont think they work any better than the sheet metal yokes. They look better. It is the tension on the springs that keeps the cantilevers centred properly.

Hi unksme.
I got AVID Tri-Dangle silver straddle-cable hangers w/ wrench from e-bay ( https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...catZ382QQfviZ1 ). It is nice. I listen, thet roller pulley yokes are not very effectively.
Sincerelly yours, Viacheslav aka Oxygen H.
