Paint question (Guess this would go here?)

Hey gang,

Part of the Bicycle-Friendly University project I'm working on includes a bike sharing system that utilizes abandoned/donated bikes that students will swap in and out throughout the day. Our original plan was to paint them all one color for easy identification, but I thought the students might like the opportunity to paint the bikes themselves.

We're not looking for professional paint jobs here or anything, but I know that we can't just slop on some paint without a little prep. Honestly, stripping the original paint off of each bike is more work than I want to put into these things; we have another fleet of brand new bikes that we'll check out, but these are just going to be placed all over campus for students to take whenever they need a bike. Any advice, tips, suggestions for getting these things ready to paint? Type of paint to use? Etc.? Thanks in advance.
