Will I damage tires by folding them for mailing purposes?

I'm mailing some MTB tires and have a small box. Do I have to mail them in their expanded position? This would require me to get a large box, which I don't want to do.

I've seen tires on sale in small square boxes at the LBS. They are folded flat like a fetucinne noodle and sort of an S shape. They are held together by handi ties. not sure if I did a good job explaining that.

These tires have some sort of underwire where they "clinch" the rim. I'm afraid that foliding them would cause me to bend that wire and compromise the tire. Am I worrying too much? Thanks.

It's the same way you fold bandsaw blades or a sunshade. I was always blown away how many people are mystified by it.

MTB tires, are different than what sheldon uses there. You can use the same principle but i have found it hard to get that compact. I just sort of make a nice figure 8 and the gently nestle them into the box. You will need an appropriately sized box.
