Advice on shifters please!

After having my 2004 Ridgeback Genesis day 2 stolen I have managed to get hold of one of the newer genesis day 1s for a reasonable price. However the components on it don't seem as good and the bike needs a total overhaul.

I have totally stripped it down and have cleaned all of the components but I thought I would put some better components back on now I have it stripped down. I am aiming to get back to the standard of the day 02 I had which I think was Tiagra apart from Tektro brakes.

I was also considering going for a double with a 9 speed rear cassette rather than the current triple, 8 speed configuration.

What shifter/brake combo units (for flat bars) can I get that would deal with a double/9-speed configuration? Or do these simply not exist for flat bars? Can I get separate brake and shifter units for flat bars that will deal with a double/9 speed configuration?

Any input would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Look at the Shimano web site. There are flat bar components under Road Bikes.

Just about any 9 speed shimano shifter will work with shimano 9-speed derailleurs and cassettes. Usually you can adjust a front triple shifter and front derailluer to work with a double crank. I used 3x9 brake/shifters on a 2x9 road bike drivetrain without problem for years. But for best luck, use twist shifters for those conversions, as you have multiple stops on your front shifter to get the front derailleur in the optimal position so the chain won't rub. I put Deore shifters on a 3x9 flat bar road bike (105 triple) and it's impossible to get the front derailler to work well over each of the 3 chainrings. Won't do that again.
