Dropping chain while shifting

Hi, although I have been riding consistently for almost 20 years I am a real novice when it comes to the mechanics of biking.

I have Campy Centaur, triple chainring group on my bike. My LBS replaced my Chorus chain about 6 months ago with a Veloce. I didn't think to tell them I wanted something comparable so ended up with the Veloce. It never seemed to shift as well as it had before but it was shifting okay just not as smoothly or quietly so I just lived with it.

However, for the past couple of months when I shift from my middle chainring to the large I often drop the chain (never happens from the large to the middle and I don't use the granny). At this point I'm typically going downhill so I downshift back to the middle and am able to pick the chain back up while pedaling and continue on (sometimes it takes a couple of tries to get the chain back on). It's been a nuisance but something I've just worked around, i.e, anticipating the need to shift and doing so early and very carefully and that has worked about half the time. Also, I typically shift when I am in the middle of the cassettes so I'm not putting to much torque on the chain while shifting chainrings.

Lately though I would say it does this about a third of the time (dropping the chain while shifting to big chainring. It concerns me because a couple of times the chain has dropped and I can't quickly/smoothly get it on the big or the middle and the chain is just kind of laying there and my fear is that it will get jammed and then I will be SOL.

I'm wondering what causes this (is the chain too slack) and how to correct it. I'm tempted just to buy a Chorus chain or Record and be done with it.

I hope I've explained it well enough, any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Susan

Turn in the high limit screw on your front derailleur about 1/4 turn.

Don in Austin, I'll give that a try. I recently bought the bicycle maintenance book by Bicycling and after reading your response looked up the high limit screw and how to adjust it, looks easy enough.

Thanks for the help.

How many miles on your chainrings(25,000mi),are the teeth shark fin shaped,if so then you might consider buying new chainrings for the ones that are worn. When tech installed chain he could of adjusted your front deraileur.
