headset question - when do you need a headset press?

i took apart my headset. i was suprised to find that i could just lift out all the pieces (upper and lower races and spacer).

ins't it supposed to be pressed in?

anyway, i cleaned everything up, regreased, and put the pieces back to together as i found them. everything seems fine. the steering seems good and the fork has no play in it.

so, was i supposed to have this pressed in? it's a newish style theadless headset from FSA.

    Races or the actual cups?
If you have an internal FSA headset then the bearings sit directly in a bulged secton of the headtube and does not require any pressing. The entirety of the "headset" looks like this:

Traditional headsets have cups that are pressed into the headtube, which the bearings then sit in.
