Iron Horse Mtb needs new crank or middle chainring

I have an Iron Horse 2.0 ARS, 8-speed, circa '99, with a Suntour Powerflo Front XR 32 crank (42T, 32T, 22T). The middle chainring, surprise, surprise, is extremely worn to the point where it frequently skips with a load on it. My local bike shop says they can't find a replacement crank, which would be cheaper than replacing the chainrings individually. I think I could get away with replacing just the center chainring as the others appear to be in good shape and exhibit none of the skipping tendencies of the middle ring. Any advice or direction appreciated.

If the rings are replaceable, just replace the middle ring. They are cheap. A 32 tooth ring should cost you less than $20.

https://www.universalcycles.com/shopp...p?category=648 for a few examples. Most likely your crank uses 64/104mm BCD chainrings but check first before buying anything.

Thanks for that info. What does the 64/104mm BCD designation refer to?

They are the bolt circle diameters (BCD) for the two outer (104 mm) and granny (64 mm) chainrings. Your replacement ring must match the 104 mm BCD.

Cranks come is a bewildering variety of BCD's so be certain you order the right one.
