Stupid spoke question

Dumb question but how are spokes measured? I mean if a spoke is said to be 200mm, is that from the tip of the threaded end to the end of the bend or to the mid axis of the bent portion or diagonally to the other end or ?

This is not a stupid question.

From Wheelbuilding, 3rd ed. by Roger Musson.

Great pic!

One warning: DT appear to measure not from the inside of the bend, but from the center of the spoke in the bend.

IOW, a 2.0 spoke measures 1mm short, a 1.8 spoke measures 0.9mm short.

Hi Mel,

I believe DT measures to the inside of the bend like the others. I use DT Swiss Competition 2.0/1.8/2.0 for most of my wheels, and they're definitely to the inside of the bend.

That's new, then. They were always 1mm short when I was doing this.

Thanks

Not to hijack the thread but...I've thought about buying the Roger Musson book. Not too many people speak about it. Is it a good one to have? I have the Schrader one, but haven't gotten Brandt's yet either.

There are lots of good books on wheelbuilding, but for me Musson's is the best. It's a step-by-step tutorial that's clearly written and beautifully illustrated. It's not expensive, even though he did raise the price about six months ago.
