bad noise when tightening bolts on rear ss/fixed hub
hi all,
i had to change a flat today and when i was putting my rear wheel back on i heard a bad "cracking" noise when i was tightening one of the bolts. it was pretty tight, but not too tight...still, i fear that i overtightened something and/or something broke in the process. frame/dropouts (steel) seem fine, the hub (surly flip flop) seems ok, but perhaps not rotating that smoothly...although i cant really compare it to how it was before. i loosed it up and started over, tightening both bolts and it seems ok...
anyone have any idea what may have broken? if anything? thanks in advance

You need to be careful with the Surly hubs. Most of them have a plain ball sealed bearing that dose not like ANY side load. Sometimes when you crank down the axle nuts it can turn the axle(and one cone) increasing the preload. Take the wheel out and make sure the axle is nice and smoooth with no drag. It can also be a crooked wheel. This will make the chain crack against the cog.

How tight is your chain?
If it's too tight it will make a popping sound and be hard to turn the cranks.

hello
On my Formula hub I heard a "CUNCK" as I was tightening the axle nut to later find out that the axle locknut had split in half.
