Upgrading to disc brakes
Hi everybody
I have a 2006 Trek 4500 and it comes with a front alloy hub and a rear Shimano RM60 Rear Hub with Bontrager Camino Rims. I would like to upgrade to disc hubs and I was wondering: what should I buy? I know I need disc hubs (I'm looking into Shimano M495) but should I get new rims? What else should I do? Should I buy new rims? I'm new to this so help is greatly appreciated!

I am going to upgrade to Shimano m495 hubs but currently I have Bontrager Camino rims and I don't know if they are disc compatible. Also, do you know if I can take them to a bike shop to have them lace them?

Just about any rim that will fit your bike will be disc compatible. Disc brakes don't touch the rim at all. There are disc only rims (that don't have a place for rim brakes). Even so, your rims will work fine. The only difference is in the spoke hole count--the hole count on the hub and the rim must match. As for lacing the wheel--give it a try. Go to Sheldon Brown's website for instructions on how to do it. It will be a fun and rewarding project. The first wheel I ever built is on my MTB (front) and it is still going good (3 years later) If you're still not comfortable doing it, take it to the shop to see if they will do it. I can't speak for the shop that you go to.

I have Bontrager Camino rims and I'm not sure if they are disc compatible. As for the spoke count, currently, I have 32 holes and the Shimano m495s have 32 holes also. However, on other Trek bikes, the disc models use Bontrager Ranger rims. Will the Camino rims work with disc brakes?

Also, should I get Shimano HB-M495-L/FH-M495-L or HB-M495-S/FH-M495-S? Keep in mind that the L is larger than the S and I have bontrager Camino rims? If anyone has experience, please share.
