dt swiss hub - small amount of play in freehub body?
 

I have a set of Bontrager XXX lites which use -- I believe -- dt swiss freehub mechanism.

I was changing the cassette when I noticed that there is a small amount of play in the freehub body. When I have the cassette removed and I grasp the body, I can push it in about half a mm into the center of the push. (i.e. when the wheel is laid horizontally, i can push the freehub body downwards). The funny bit is that it springs back.

Is this normal? So far the wheel has peformed fantastic. Everything rolls smoothly.... except for this odd cassette body play...

I have a Bontrager Disc Lite wheel set and I was told the freehub is DT/Swiss.

Regarding movement, half mm is most likely fine. Plus since it performs well, you're probably okay.

After about three years, my freehub developed enough play that it would ghost shift. I was able to wiggle the freehub radially (up/down with wheel in its normal orientation).

I think the freehub cost~$30, and only available thru a Trek/Fisher LBS; it's not offered on line. One more oddity, is it takes an 11mm hex wrench to remove the freehub body. I couldn't find one, but a 7/16" hex wrench works fine (7/16" = 11.113 mm). And, my freehub body came with a 8mm to 11mm adapter to fit the freehub body.

His freehub body is a completely different part than what you have. He can pull his off with no tools! Tiny wiggle is fine.

Okay, so its about 1 mm... i was actually looking at a ruler and .5mm really is miniscule.

Anyhow - I read elsewhere online the bit about pulling off the cassette body without tools. Really? I tried just grasping it and yanking -- no luck. Which in-hind sight, is probably a good thing. Any insight on how to do this or maybe get more leverage than just my climber's arms to pull off?

I'm not familiar with a Bontrager freehub that can be removed without tools. You might want to send a message to Trek and see if they can offer advice.

Agree with the suggestion to contact Bontrager...go to website. I have Campy record hub I cleaned and re lubed...no play before and after the rebuild...I can't believe that a DT Swiss hub would have any play either...if that is infact the manufacturer.
