How do I know if my XT brake pads are gone?

Hi guys, excuse what might sound like an obvious question...

How can I find out if my Shimano XT disc brake pads are worn out? They have always squealed on and off, which appears to be a common thing. However I'm now wondering if the consistent squealing is because they are nearly worn out. On my last ride they were howling.

Is there some simple measurement I can do, or is there something I can look for visually that will let me know when it's time to change the pads?

Thanks,
Mon

You have to eyeball the material on the pads. when there's less than .5mm of material left, replace them.

In other words if you have metal to metal, they should have been changed last weekend.

There's usually some water clearing channels in the pad surface. If they're worn away, replace. Some pads have a wear line molded into the top of the pad. Probably not the cause of your worsened squealing, unless the wear has altered the toe-in.

There are grooves or slots in the pads that run from the top to the bottom. When those are gone, it is time to replace.
