disc brake grinding noise

does anyone know why my rear disc brake would make rubbing/grinding noises when I go to the middle ring/higher gears and the big ring/all gears?

It only hapens when in those gears and not he lower ones. The bike and brakes are new and the LBS told me about brake pad break-in time, but the connection to the gears throws me.

Thanks,
Jerold

New bike? Take it back and ask the wrench.

yeah i don't know about that. What gear your in shouldn't have anything to do with your brakes.

One thing, this probably has nothing to do with the problem, but is your rear tire in the dropouts correctly and tight?

+1 It must be pulling the wheel to the side, that's about the only thing that could cause something like that. With the bike on the ground open your skewer and give it a turn to tighten it and then close it again if that doesn't do it, take it back and have them look at it.

The rear wheel is super tight. I've never taken it off. BTW, the bike is a 2008 Trek Fuel EX8. The rear dropouts consists of the chainstays and the seatstays all having their own hole that the skewer goes thru to attach the wheel. I don't have a bike stand, so I haven't taken the wheel off. The skewer is really tight - tighter than I've ever had on any other bike.

I'm gonna take it back to the LBS for it's initial "new bike" tune up soon.

Thanks!

Does it do this in the stand or just when you ride? Are you certain it is the brakes that you are hearing?

I don't have a stand and oh yeah, it's the brakes. metal on metal grinding like someone sharpening an ax on a grinding wheel.

Maybe the skewer is too tight and it's affecting the wheel/ brake pad alignment? Just opening the skewer handle is an effort. I'm gonna try loosening up the skewer nut a turn and trying it.
