a different kind of triple

So if most road triples are 30-39-53, would it be possible to run 34-42-56? Do these rings come in same BCD? Anyone ever heard of such a thing? I can't spin as fast as others and the 56 might give an oldster a chance to pace with the A group and still climb.

Do you have the muscle to push bigger gears?
Loosescrews.com has a wide variety of chainrings.

Very young folks can push a 56. I think he's just crunching numbers and has no idea of how hard it would be to pedal that big chainring.

I'll go out on a limb and say the reason you can't keep up with the other folks on your 53/11 or 53/12 is because we old folks lack the muscle to do it. Going to a 56/11, or there abouts, is like saying I can't bench press 200lbs anymore. So, I think I'll try 250. If you can't push a 53 anymore then drop to a 50. Don't go the other direction. Good luck

I'm 65 and considering going from a 53 big ring to a 50. Just the thought of a 56 makes my knees hurt.
If you can't keep up find a gear that lets you turn the cranks faster. A cadence meter is a good investment.

The smallest one will depend on the chainstay, you may run into a problem with not enough clearance for the gear/chain.

The largest depends on the front deraileur. Otherwise you can pretty much do whatever you'd like

He didn't say he couldn't push a 53. He said he couldn't spin. Maybe he has trouble keeping up on fast descents. In that case, a taller gear is in order.

What he said was:

A 56 isn't what he needs. OTH, let him try it and find out for himself what it's like. Just remember to report back to us on how easy it is to pedal that 56.

I push a 56 but that's with 20" wheels. Downsized from a 63T Big Ring.

Gonzo Bob hit the nail on the head. I have several road bikes, one each set-up as 50/34, 52/39, 52/42/30, also cassettes from 11/23 to 13/29. There is one long ride with some climbing that has a long gradual descent where I always get dropped; at the end of a long day I can't spin with the young 'uns. AT the parking lot I tell the guys I use the descent as a cool down, but my preference would be to finish with (or ahead of) the group.

Air - Thanks, I know the FD may need to be adjusted, but I'll also watch for clearance at the dropout.

I may not set up a bike with the 56 ring but if I do I'll report back. Was just hoping to hear from someone who had a 56 on a traditional bike before I go tinkering.
