locked pedals?!

I am a complete novice when it comes to bikes. I have just purchased a cheap one in order to make the trip to my near by university campus easier. However, after using it for the first time, and after less than a minute of cycling the pedals seem to have locked. In saying this I mean that they will not move forward when I put pressure on them. They will move backwards if I pedal that way but obviously the bike won't move if that's the case. As a result my brand new bike has been rendered temporarily (i hope) useless.

Please, if any body at all could help me with this matter I would be very appreciative

Many thanks,
James

I say rear wheel is jammed, or rubbing against the brake pad. If it freewheels, it can't be that or chain jam.

I'd take it to a bike store. It's unlikely that they'll charge much to fix it, unless it has serious problems.
