Calipers are much more common. I think there is only one road type brake lever that is V-brake compatible. Meaning if you run V-brakes and need a road style lever, you will have to use that particular lever or get a travel agent to use with regular levers.

I would say caliper because you don't need that much stopping power. The tires don't have enough traction to put it to use. If I can easily lock up my wheels on caliper brakes, I don't need something that will lock them even more easily.

Unless you're talking about a true touring bike, cyclocross bike, or flat bar road bike, it would be very uncommon to find a "road bike" that has the bosses for linear pull brakes. What type of bike are you talking about?

I would go with linear pull brakes, then, if it comes equipped with them. The levers will be made for them, there's better clearance for fenders if you ever decided to go that route, and you might notice slightly better braking power.
