Mounting Bar-end shifters near the hoods?

Mounting Bar-end shifters near the hoods?
Is it possible to mount bar end shifter near the hoods on drop bars? I know Paul's thumbies allow them to be mounted on the flats, but what about above or below the hoods? Is this a possibility or functional? How does this compare to Kelly take-offs with down tube shifters?

How durable and funtional are Kelly take-offs? Do any of you have experience with them?

You don't have to use Paul Thumbies. I mounted Ultegra bar end shifters on Suntour thumb shifter mounts. They are on 7/8" bars, but the steel clamps could be spread to fit road bars.

Death fork? Naaaah!!
As for durability, I think the handlebar would snap before the Take-Off.
One caveat: if you have interrupter levers the shift lever may foul the brake lever at the rearward end of its travel. Careful adjustment of the interrupter lever angle will fix this.

They are quite functional and are the nearest thing to STI/Ergo at much reduced cost. Certainly MUCH more accessble that downtube or bar-end shifters, particularly when you are standing.
They do have one problem. Chris Kelly closed his business so I don't know where you can buy them these days.
