will any shimano 7 spd index shifter work with Shimano alivio 7 spd rear derailleur?

I have a circa 1994 mountain bike with Shimano alivio components

the rear gear shifter no longer works. I took it apart and put it back together but did not get it to work. I wanted to get a replacement shifter. so I was wondering :

will any shimano 7 spd index shifter work properly with the existing Shimano alivio 7 spd rear derailleur and rear cogs that the bike came with? will another brand 7 spd index shifter work?

Any 7 speed Shimano shifter will work. SRAM makes some of their shifters Shimano compatible, other SRAM are not. Not sure of any other makes.

My SX4's are compatible. I have an 8-speed though.
