Is there a cure for axle creep on those coaster brake bikes?It keeps riding up and the bolts are tight as I can get them.I tighten them until they dont move.

Serrated washers work well, as do chain tensioners.



Hint: You only really need one on the drive side. Running two does make chain tensioning and wheel centering easier.

My dropouts are the ones at an angle down and are not like the track bikes.You see the bolts tore up my dropouts badly,that the dopouts are spreading and I have to bang the back with a hammer.I dont have a picture except the bike is like this

Yes its my trek( I have an earlier model of this type) ,The dropout steel is about twice as thick as the normal dropout width and with all the flats that I have had,the internal bolts and outside bolts did a good job of digging into the steel due to tightness and axle creep, that I have to sometimes file the steel inside of the dropouts.

All I can say is my dropouts are in bad shape,I dont know how much it would cost to reweld new dropouts on the old frame,but trek doesnt warranty damage, just defects.The bike is only 10 months old.

The older the bike gets,the more problems I have with it, the more bitter taste in my mouth I get about trek.

Wow, it does sound like you've had some issues, but it also sounds like you've ridden a bike made for casual cruising quite a bit harder than it was made to.

To resolve your issue and get more out of the bike, you may consider looking for some larger serrated locknuts for the hub, as well as some larger diameter washers for the axle nuts. That should help spread out the load and prevent the dropout from spreading. As for the slipping, I'd try the chain tensioners. Some cost as little as $2 and work on more than just track dropouts.

I guess so,I worn out the coaster brake wheel in the 10 months I had it(about minimum 2500 miles),I love riding this bike because I love the sitting upright position and dont like the crunched position.

Would my local bike shop have these items?

Also I live in pothole and bad sidewalk heaven( south chicago and northwest indiana,Indianapolis blvd mainly in whiting).I believe that the axle creep is caused by hitting those bad sidewalks and bumps.

People wander why I used to buy wal-mart bikes,they get torn up.

Yes, a LBS should have those items, just fine one that doesn't look twice at your choice of ride. A good wrench will take it on as a personal quest to fix an issue with any bike...find that guy.

I went to my local bike shop and he told me he does not have any larger washers or larger headed bolts for single speed axles,He told me I was not the only person with this problem.He told me that he stopped selling trek because he said the bikes are just junk.I couldnt believe what I was hearing.He said "yes I just stopped selling them because many people complained about problems with the treks".He also told me to get a junk bike and cut off the dropouts(since my axle is long enough) just align with the dropout on the bike and tighten the bolt on the axle.

He sells giant and fuji.No single speed cruisers of any kind.I hate those bikes where you have to ride like the hunchback of notre dame,but thats all he sells.

When you see a bike in a store you should look at it as a suggestion, and not as something that's fixed by law.
If you want a wider seat, bars higher and closer and easy-to-push gearing that's well withing tweaking of many bikes. And if the shop won't discuss your preferences - find another one.
