old shimano shifters work with new levers?

Hi, thank you for the quick response on my other question. I'm upgrading my old 1994 Gary Fisher Mt Tam.

I have the old 94 Shimano XT Rapid Fire Shifters and brake levers. I need to upgrade my brake levers. I'm thinking of going with new LX levers. Will these levers work with my 94 shifters? Or do I have to buy new levers and shifters? Thanks again.

If the unit you have is intergrated meaning the brake levers and shifters are one piece then NO! However if you have seperate shifter pods and brake levers then yes more than likely it will work.
