Cleaning/Lubing new chain

I installed a new chain on my bike a few weeks ago. It had that clear sticky lube that Shimano puts on its new chains. Now, the chain has become dirty and sticky. I want to switch to paraffin lube and am wondering if I should clean the chain before I apply my first coat of lube on this chain or whether I should just apply the lube.

Thanks,

Ray

You need to clean it. Throw it in a bucket with a little gasoline, swish it around, pull it out, rinse in fresh water, air dry (compressor works nicely), lube as you see fit. I've done this a million times. The factory grease has no place on a bicycle.

Factory lube on the chain is not a problem, actually good stuff. wipe off excess and install the chain.

Care of your chain is paramount in keeping it from 'stretching' prematurely. That means periodic cleaning and lubing.
Remove the chain and dunk it in mineral spirits/paint thinner. I don't recommend gasoline, it's flash over point is too dangerous and the aromatic additives are quite toxic and cancer causing.

If you're a rich guy, use a parts cleaning station, or ultrasonic parts cleaner. If you're broke like me, use a Folger's coffee container full of mineral spirits. Use a tooth brush if the chain is really nasty.
Rinse clean with hot water. If you don't have air compressor, spray down the chain generously with WD40 to remove water. Wipe off chain with a clean rag.
As for lubes, IMO wax is a poor choice. WD40 is a poor choice. A heavy weight motor oil is good.
A specific chain lube spray is good too. Most go on thin and thicken up.
I like Kalgard Moly Chain lube for motorcycles.
