If you don't have the threaded braze ons you can't use them anyway. But the main advantage they have over the slotted stops that are on a lot of frames is that the outer stops have barrel adjusters so you can fine tune your derailleur adjustments, which isn't too critical for the rear derailleur but could make fine adjustment of a front derailleur a little challenging.
Edit: You can get an in-line adjuster for the front shift housing or barrel adjusters that will fit into the housing stops on your frame. I'd recommend the latter as they'll probably be less finicky and likely to bind the cable.
