Removing Suntour Bar End Shifters
 

I have a bike with Suntour bar end shifters. I have been looking to see how they are supposed to come off. From what I can tell they are simply jammed on and once in are impossible to remove. I see nothing that looks like a loosening screw or anything of the sort. Trying to use brute force to twist them off does nothing as well. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how these things come off?

IIRC, there is a Phillips head screw that you turn IN.
I had a set of them that I traded, so the memory is a bit foggy. You may have to remove the cable and move the lever all the way in one direction???

Try twisting the whole shifter clockwise.

Remove the lever. Insert a 6mm allen key and turn it clockwise.

Oops, I got Suntour and Shimano levers combined. After dirtdrop's answer I walked down to my shop to check.

For Suntour, turn the whole lever counterclockwise.

The lever twisting trick will work on both shimano and suntour, assuming they're not seized or too tight. Dirtdrop's solution also applies to both.

Just put a pair on my wifes bike. Turn the whole lever clockwise, as stated above.

There's only one right way to do it and I gave it to you.

Take The Lever Out ,To do this:
Take Off The Lock Nut And Adjust Nut W/screwdriver And Socket, It's On The Inside Side Of Lever And Pull Out The Pivot Bolt, and the lever wil com right off. And You'll See The The Bolt Head Underneath that tightens the expanders that hold the shifter to the inside of the bar (look Up The Tube). If The Thing Is Thightened Properly You Won't Be Able To Twist It

Thanks guys. I just needed to apply more force to take the lever off. Once it came off I just had to unscrew a 5mm hex bolt and it come off just fine. I was also able to put it on better than it was before.

A diagram for reference. The expander bolt (#19) is right-hand threaded, but since you're engaging it from the bottom turning it clockwise loosens it and counterclockwise tightens it. All bar-end shifters (I've worked on Campy, SunTour, and Shimano) work this way.

...I recently discovered that the Shimano clamp expansion screws #19 (which you can still find for sale) will work on the old Suntour barcons. FWIW. :)

Most important tip: After you took them apart make sure that outer locknut is tight if you put them back on, that thing likes to fall off.

this is it, there's an expansion screw inside the barrel that you can't see until you remove the lever

YES, Because the bolt head (19) faces Away from you, you reverse the lefty-loosie too

for outer domed Locknut (16) a Screwdriver with a notch made in the center is required ..

And especially when re tightening it again.. If you dont get it tight you will lose a very hard to replace Piece.
