Mavic 840 RD compatibility
I'm going to be picking up a bike with a Mavic 840 RD and 8spd cog. Currently it has a bar end shifters, but I think I may swap those out.
I would like to try out some Campy Ergo brifters. I've always found Shimano a bit large for my hands.
Will I have any issues getting the campy stuff to index? I assume I'll have to find 8speed campy. Could I buy current generation Campy and use a shiftmate or something? I may end up upgrading the whole drive train so it would be nice to already have the shifters.

Unique Vintage Steel
Are the bar-end shifters indexed? and if so, shimano or campy or mavic? I'm not well versed on what worked with mavic rd's in the ways of indexing. But fairly sure shimano and campy never mixed well (or at all) when it came to RD to shifters.

BTW, 8-speed Campy is an orphan and has achieved collectors status so either go more modern or prepare to pay a premium for the 8-speed Ergo's, cassettes, etc.

The bar-ends it has now are indexed Ultegra. As far as I know the cassette is a Mavic 8spd, but I guess it could be Shimano. Would a Shimano cassette even fit on a Mavic 501 hub?
Idealy I'd like to buy some modern 10 speed campy ergos and run the Mavic RD and whatever 8spd cassette is on it now. But I have a feeling that may not work even w/ a shiftmate. What do you guys think? Can the modern ergos be rebuild/modified to index the correct distance?
That way I'd already have the shifters when I upgrade the drivetrain to 10spd down the road. I don't think I could afford the whole upgrade at once.
