Not So Free Freehub!!!

Hello,

I have a set of new Easton Orion II wheels, and the rear wheel has the R3 Rear Hub assembly.

I installed a new Dura Ace 12-27 cassette, and mounted the wheel on my bike.

I notice several things.

The rear wheel, if spun by hand or by the crank, won't freewheel very long at all. It seems as if there's a great deal of friction somewhere. There is no brake pad intereference, nor frame interference.

I can turn the crank backwards, and the rear wheel will start to slowly spin backwards as well. I've never seen THAT before...

I can manually spin the rear wheel forward, and the crank will slowly start to move forward as well. Again, I've never seen that before either.

The rear freehub doesn't seem to be freewheeling properly...Is this just because the wheel and hub is new?

Any suggestions? The front wheel, when spun, will spin forever...

Thanks,

DPN

If it is new the lube inside is still causing some friction. Just ride it and see how it does after a few days.
My Ksyriums do the same thing. Always just a little friction even after servicing.

The proper term was "viscous drag", not really friction, but the end result is the same. Another source of drag may be new seals which will also loosen up with time and miles.

You do know I was yanking his chain (and let's not get into a chain cleaning thread here!).

I don't care what you say or mean, if you ride Ksyriums you're OK by me; I LOVE mine.

Sure I knew but couldn't resist the urge to offer the precise terminology too. Good straight lines can't be ignored.
