Chain slap
I seem to get excessive chain slap on my 9 speed mtb compared to my 7-speed. The 9-speed runs an XT rear derailer.
Is there a way i can reduce this without dismantling the RD?

I was assuming the chain is the original but could have been replaced. The bikes a 2003 Kona Cinder Cone I got third hand. Only light use though.
How do I check correct chain length?

Make sure the RD's spring tensioner is dialed in properly.
The spring in the hanger pivot is supposed to be set to match the pulley cage pivot spring.

If you're getting a lot of slapping on downhill trails, try using the outer chainring. It'll give you more tension. Avoid the larger two or three cogs for extended periods when in the outer ring though.
