    How do I find out the age of my bike[s]?

    I recently bought a Raleigh Technium and Ross road bikes. I got them both for $90. Anyways, I want to find out when they were made. Can you please help me? Thanks.

    Any serial numbers?

    You may also be able to age date the components to narrow it down to a couple of years.

    One fairly simple way is to find the age of the components, assuming they're original.

    Here's a link to the vintage trek site, click, on "component dates." Your components will have date codes stamped on them, you can interpret them with the info on the trek site.

    You should always post drive side pics. I'm guessing 1987 on the Technium [with no basis for it]

    Im guessing 70's or early 80's. And without seeing the drivetrain, Im guessing 5 speed rear cogs and either 26 or 27 inch rims. Both of those bikes look like the classic 70's 10 speeds 2 x 5, with the suicide brake levers. Good bikes though and good deal at both for 90 bux. Looks like u ready to ride!! One word of caution, try to use the lower brake levers and not the upper extensions. There is a reason they are called "suicide levers"... Some people even remove them.

    That Ross has a very strong resemblance to the Gran Tour model sold in the 70's. In my travels through the bike world the last three years, I had two Gran Tours. Ross made lower priced bikes until the mid 80's when they came out with the signature series. Still, the Gran Tour was a nice bike, fully lugged frame, Hi tensile steel, the components are not high end, but they're not junk. Usually early Shimano Altus. Very servicable. I'm betting you have one very nice component on that bike, an early Shimano rachet shifter. It makes a rachet sound as you shift giving you an indication how close you are to the next gear. When I sold my Gran Tours, I kept the rachet shifters!
    Another indicator that the Ross is an older bike, no bottle holder braze-ons. Even the lowly Enhancer model of the mid 80s had bottle holder braze-ons on the down tube.
    As I recall, the Gran Tour had Quick Release on the front and nuts on the back, just like yours. I thought it had an alloy seat post, but I could be wrong. If that's not a Gran Tour, it's within one model level of one.
    BTW, $45 for that bike in that condition is a good price.

    I'm not a Raleigh expert, but I've had about seven or eight pass through my hands including a Technium. The Raleigh Technium is part alloy, part steel, bonded with glue, as I recall. Those shifters look like they could be index on the stem. If that's correct and if that is original equipment, that would make the bike a very late 80's, but I'm guessing.
    However, for sure, a Technium is NOT a 70's bike, it's a mid to late 80's Raleigh model. I think the name Technium was gone by the early 90's but I could be wrong about that.
    EDIT: If that's an index shifting Technium and you paid $45 for it, you stole it. Cleaned up that's a $100 bike around here, easy. Maybe $150.
    If it's friction shifting you still did very well as a Technium's under $90 usually sell very quickly. I think "ya done real fine" with both those bikes.

    As already noted, the Ross is earlier than the Raleigh. I'd say late '70's or early '80's on the Ross, mid to late '80's on the Raleigh. The cranks, derailleurs, and brakes will usually have date codes stamped on the back of them, and you can usually decipher the codes at the vintage trek site I gave you above. I think it's likely the components are mostly, if not all, original-
