    Chainring bolt is stuck! Please advise.

    Hi folks. I've successfully removed the chainwheel on my mountain bike, and got off four of the chainring bolts, but the last one is stuck. I have the right tools (Parktool hex wrench and Parktool Chainring Nut Wrench CNW), but it won't budge. I sprayed some WD-40 in there too, but still no joy. Worst of all, the slotted nut is getting stripped. What should I do to get that damn thing off?

    EDIT: Success! I drilled the chainring bolt right out. Worked like a charm! Thanks all for the help!

    1. Forget WD40. Get some real Liquid wrench or similar penetrating oil product.
    2. Make sure that your allen wrench fits snugly (important). If in any doubt at all, get a brand new one.

    +1 on the Liquid Wrench.

    Can you grip the "nut" with a wrench instead of using the slot tool?

    When you finally get it out, use anti-sieze on the threads when you reassemble. If they are stainless parts, they have probably galled, and penetrating fluid may not help. bk

    My allen wrenches are the right size. The problem isn't the hexagon side, it's the other side unfortunately.

    The slot end is pretty thin, so it's really difficult to get a proper grip on it with a wrench or pliers.

    I'm gonna do a web search for the liquid wrench stuff.

    As it will need replacing anyways why not just drill the unit out. As suggested by operator!

    I've never used a drill for anything except putting holes in walls. What exactly would I have to do? If I drill through the nut itself, it will just spin around in the hole that it sits in, won't it?

    A hammer impact wrench is a tube that you can attach bits, sockets etc to one end that you put onto a fastener and then strike the other end with a hammer. The tube changes the some of impact force to a torquing force, loosening the fastener.

    The impact wrenches that you hit with a hammer are inexpensive and often suffice for little jobs like this. I've seen them for about $12. The drawback is that you have to have something to hammer against. If the crank is off the bike and you can support the back with a block of wood it should get the job done.

    If you are actually making a trip out to buy a penetrating oil PB Blaster is better than Liquid Wrench. Your local chain auto parts store should have both and likely has the hammer impact wrench too.

    Now if it was me, I'd just hit it with the little 3/8" cordless impact. That job isn't worth turning the compressor on for

    If you strip the hex and decide you have to drill, there are left hand drill bits available. Often they will catch and unscrew the stuck fastener and save you actually having to drill it out.

    If the bolt is steel PB Blaster is a good choice for a penetrating oil. If they're aluminum penetrating oil has little effect. Hold the bolt assembly still with an allen wrench you're willing to [possibly] sacrifice and drill from the slot side.

    Yeah, I think I'll drill it, but that will have to wait till tomorrow as it's late and I've been drinking beer and whiskey. Power tools and alcohol equal blood on the kitchen floor.

    You could grind off the lip carefully with a Dremel. Better to take the crank off for this.
