Campagnolo rear hub play
 

I've built and repaired many bicycles and hubs, but always cup - and - cone type. I consider myself fairly good as to adjusting them to run freely with zero play. Now I built a new bicycle with Campagnolo Veloce, and after the first 250 km did an overall check out - headset, spokes, cranks, etc. I noticed a small amount of play at the rear wheel, about 0.5 mm at the rim. Took off the wheel, disassembled the hub and found 3 sealed bearings - no adjustment possible. Now this play is not too much, but it bothers me. I thought about replacing the bearings, but maybe the new ones would have the same play. What do you think?
BTW, I have a '90s 105 cup and cone rear hub in another bicycle that still runs like new after many thousands of kms...

Put it back together and tighten the bolts with 2 17mm wrenches until the play is gone. I'd then tap (tappity tap tap) both sides with a hammer and check the adjustment. It's basically the same as using the locknuts on a cup and cone hub for adjustment.

Thanks but this must be another type of hub. Tried that but there is no adjustment possible, the bearings are common sealed ones. It seems the only way is to replace them.

I had a similar problem with a Shimano rear hub on a wheel which I'd rebuilt. After endless adjustment of the wheel-bearings without any success, I found the problem to be that the 10mm bolt which holds the free-hub body was very slightly loose, causing the wheel to show exactly the symptoms you describe. I tightened the bolt (~365 in-lbs) and the problem went away.

This is the method that I use and it seems to work very well. if you tried it and it didn't work then we are looking at another problem. 250 km is a good weekend worth of riding. If the bearings feel like crap then there is another issue. My guess would be seating but it's hard to tell without having them in my hands.
