campy record brifter snapped.. now what?

I was shifting from small to big chainring in front when suddenly I felt no more resistance.. My shift lever snapped off! The _plastic_ severed near the joint.

I looked into the small parts thing and it's almost 60$ for just that little shift lever.

What should I do? Buy a brand new lever on ebay and save this for a downtube shifter/fixie build? I'm guessing super glue isn't going to be a good idea..

Isn't sixty bucks less than it would cause to replace it. Plus you can't measure in Dollars the experience you'll gain by refurbing your Record shifters.

Which shifter is it? How old? Where did you buy it?

EDIT: Sorry, title tells me it's Record. Which version? The new QS?

i do like working with my hands but 60$ for a plastic lever is a little bit silly to me.

I think the shifter is 2006. record carbon.

If you decide on a new shifter, the old becomes a parts donor that might save you $$ in the future.

Another thought: what's the warranty on Campagnolo Ergos?

+1 for warranty. they (campagnolo) know those carbon/plastic parts are going to break and they usually don't hassle you about replacement.

It's actually a plastic embedded with carbon. Also this is part of an assembly that has a few little plates and a spring. You are also getting dinged by the EURO-USD exchange rate.

All in all, it's still a lot cheaper than a new lever.

I decided to buy the replacement part. Now I'm trying to figure out what I can do while waiting.. There's this metal pin that I can't figure out how to remove. It holds the shift lever to the rotating indexed part.

Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself. I don't exactly know what is being shipped to me. It could be the disassembled shift lever or the shift lever assembled. IF it's assembled already then I'll need to take apart the entire lever :|

I guess I'm lucky this was the left shifter..

Yes, you need to take the entire lever apart to replace that lever. There are instruction all over the web. Google it.

I'll rebuild your lever for free as long as you pay for the parts.

But since the lever is a 2006, couldn't you warranty it? Campy has a 3 year warranty

Oh search ergo rebuild on youtube and you'll find videos on how to rebuild them. They are actual campy produced videos

I'm curious about the warranty. Lickbike.com claims the warranty will only be honored through 'brick and mortar' stores - presumably ones that are authorized dealers. Is this true, or is Lickbike feeding us a line? I understand that if the product is purchased used without proof of purchase, the warranty would likely not be honored.

Contrary to what some sellers are saying, there are no warranties on Shimano, Campagnolo or Sidi products unless they are purchased from a brick and mortar store. That store must also have a phone number with people to provide you service. If you are buying from the internet, Craigslist or EBay you may not have a warranty at all. Parts purchased from overseas may have to be sent back to the country of origin for warranty service. To find out who is an authorized dealer you can call the US offices of these companies: Campagnolo (760)931-0106, Shimano (800)423-2420, and Sidi (800)578-5790. Lickton's and lickbike.com are authorized Shimano, Campagnolo and Sidi dealers.

My interpretation of that is you should be fine if you bought your campy stuff from Licktons, Excel, Nashbar etc. If you bought it from "bobs bikes" on ebay and Bob is really running "bobs bikes" out of his basement when he's not working at the cement plant you are SOL

But the original price you paid for record stuff wasn't? You can't buy a ferarri and then complain about the price of an oil change.

Unfortunately, that's the way that it is. The distribution and overhead costs of maintaining inventories and handling such very slow moving small parts makes their prices seem outrageous. I think that's why so many manufacturers don't do that anymore.

The levers are not plastic embedded with carbon. It is an actually a pretty complex layup of carbon fiber cloth with a fair amount of hand work to complete what you get. I crashed pretty hard this summer and dinged up my levers (2003 Record) pretty badly. No problem they worked for the rest of the summer after I "patched them up" with clear krylon (cosmetic). Structurally they are fine. I replaced them with a pair of carbon lever handles and a rubber cover for a lot more than $60 a piece. I am keeping the replaced ones as backups. Also, replaced the small springs at the same time. The levers had over 16K miles when I crashed. They are like new. A lot better than replacing a whole set of Ergos or STI.
By the way any one else ever break a lever handle? Never heard of anyone having any problems with the carbon levers breaking.
The instructions on Campyonly.com are relatively straight forward...I had no problems. Take the time to understand the assembly diagrams before you start and try and do it in one sitting so you don't forget how the lever came apart...good luck.

Where do I buy a replacement shift lever for LH '03 Campy Record?

The same thing happened to me (shift lever snapped under load) but thus far I've been unable to locate a replacement LH shift lever. I have a mechanic who will do the repair for me (I am mechanically challenged) but need to know where I can procure the part. Where did you purchase the plastic lever?

Must I replace the '03 Record lever with '03 Record or can I use a newer version? Will Chorus/Veloce parts work for Record? Thanks for any advice you can pass along.

Licktons told me the same thing and it was confirmed by Campy's US headquarters. If you bought it from Licktons you can ship it back to them and they will handle the warranty claim. If you bought it mail order elsewhere, you will have to prevail on the good graces of an LBS to handle the claim.

I ended up replacing the shift lever by myself - I bought the lever from oscher USA. Try them out! I don't know if they carry a lever of your vintage but the lever is probably compatible with many other levers. Best thing to do is to ask them directly if you're unsure.
