replace shimano short cage with long cage?

Not the entire RD, just the cage itself. I have a marginal Tiagra long cage RD on my road bike now and I can get a used 105 short cage that's in good shape for almost nothing. I'd like to put the 105 on the bike but unfortunately with a triple up front I really need a long cage.

Is it possible to swap the cages between these two RD's? More trouble than it's worth?

Thanks !

Can't do it on current Shimano derailleurs.

Older ones had removable "grub" screws that would allow you to unscrew the cage but the new ones have everything riveted in place.

This sux because it also kills the ability to adjust the cage tension.

New chain would be necessary.

That's what I was afraid of. I took a cage off an older RD once when I was cleaning it up and was wondering if that was still possible.
