10 speed bar end shifters compatible w/ 9 speed?

I'm trying to convert one of my road bikes to a TT bike, I am keeping my eye on a ful aero set-up w. 10 speed shifters, but my bike is 9 speed, will the shifters function without a problem? Thanks.

Just put the shifter in friction mode for now. Next time you replace cassette and chain get 10 speed and put the shifter in index mode.

Using the shifters in friction mode is one way and it will definitely work. There are two other ways to make it work in indexed mode:

    1. Install the 10-speed shifters. Keep the 9-speed cassette and chain, and hook the shifter cable according to the Alternate Cable Routing (B) shown on this page by Sheldon Brown (top 1/3). It should work well without any problems.

    2. If you insist on a commercial solution, install a Shiftmate.

By the way, when you decide to convert your drivetrain to 10-speed, the only things left to convert are the cassette and chain. The rest is and will be fully compatible.
