making it go quicker

Hi, I've got an old Nishiki mnt bike & after putting a new chain on yesterday I found the rear cassett jumping, nipping down to my local bike shop at the 11th hour on a Sat afternoon he advised me to renew the cassett, but he only had a new one in stock which was the same as my old one,12,14,16,18,20,22,24.Now Iv'e been thinking to go faster which size should I replace it with? The crank cogs are 28,38,48,and they are also past the sell by date, gear changers are "thumbys"? and I've always had 1 extra position that was not used, so looks like I've got 21gears but can only use 20.I live in a very flat part of Danmark & never use the granny ring,I have an 18 kilometer each way comute manly cycle paths.Does anybody have any suggestions on what I could fit without spending too much money? would a 30,42,52 chainring & an 11-32 cassett go straight in? thanks for any ideas. Nod

Well, 48 is about as big as mountain bike cranks go. You could get a road crankset with a 52 tooth big ring, and you would probably need to move or replace the front derailer in order to do that.

Alternately, if you want one more speed, you could get a rear cassette with a small 11-tooth gear. That would get you only one more speed, but it would be the cheapest.

A new crankset with a larger 52 tooth ring would get you an entire new *range* of higher gears.

Also, slick tires will lower your rolling resistance and should be fine on bike paths, I do it all the time and never have issues with traction except in mud.

If you don't use it as a mountain bike, and you want to go faster, look into putting on a road crankset. Talk to your LBS about whether it would work.

Depending on the condition and the quality of the bike, this might be a complete waste of money.

I have a Nishiki mtb that has a 52/40/28 crank set and a 12/32 cassette. It doesn't make me any faster unless I'm going down hill or have a hurricane like tailwind. I can only spin so fast or mash so hard

+1 How often are you in your high gear and spinning absolutely as fast as you can, if you are not then having taller gears is not going to make you any faster, only keep you from using your top gears. Just my opinoin, take it for what it is worth.
