shimano nexus internal hub - minimum ratio?

What's the minimum front chainring/rear sprocket ratio for the Nexus hub?

I can't find this information anywhere. Even the Rohloff specifies a minimum, so this hub must too.

bump.

I would really, really like to hear someone chime in on this who has an answer, or at least some experience with a range of ratios.

Have you tried calling Shimano directly? They don't have an e-mail address on their web site but they do answer the phone. Here is Shimano's US contact info:

Shimano American Corporation
One Holland, Irvine, California 92618 U.S.A.
Phone: +1-949-951-5003 / Fax: +1-949-768-0920

I don't believe they publish a minimum ratio. I know Rohloff does because they don't want you to break it by putting too much torque through it. I have mine at 48-19 but I know a couple of guys who are riding them with 42x23 with no problem. You better have a lot of hills to go up to ride that setup.

Actually, I believe Rohloff is the ONLY company that attempts to give a number for this.

There are too many variables for a meaningful number to be provided. Rohloff's is probably excessively conservative, 'cause Rohloff hubs are super-strong.

I can tell you that when we set up a Surly Pugsley with something like 24/22, the Nexus self-destructed (one of the gear rings cracked.)

I would guess that a 2:1 ratio would be pretty safe, maybe even a bit lower if you are gentle in changing gears and don't "slam" the pedals when resuming pedaling after coasting.

SRAM gives exact ratios in their manual. However, it's obvious they aren't very carefully thought out because on some hubs they specify different ratios for different wheel sizes, while on others they only give a single ratio.

Thanks for the info on the self destructing 24/22. I guess the upside of the Nexus is that (since Shimano is silent) experimenting with low primary ratios won't void the warranty.

Problem is that although keeping the primary ratio around 2:1 would be useful for most riding, it's not low enough for running dual chainrings up front to extend the range.
