RD & Front Cranks

Is a shimano Ultegra 6600 RD long cage compatible with a double front crank or do I need the short cage RD?

Bikes: 2006 Windsor Dover w/105, 2007 GT Avalanche w/XT, 1995 Trek 820 setup for touring, 201? Yeah single-speed folder, 199? Huffy tandem.

Medium/long cage will work just as well. The only real advantage of a road short cage (SS) over road medium/long cage (GS) is lower weight.

You didn't mention what range you're running in the rear, but a long cage will work in any case.

Good point Bob Barker. If you'll be using a cassette with larger than 27-teeth cogs, you'll be best off with a mountain bike rear derailleur. Either the MTB short/medium (GS) or MTB long cage (SGS).

Official Shimano party line for rear deraillaurs:

Road SS ("short" cage)............Double chainring....27T or smaller cassette
Road GS ("medium"/"long").....Triple chainring.......27T or smaller cassette
MTB GS ("short"/"medium").....Double chainring.....28T or larger cassette
MTB SGS ("long" cage)............Triple chainring........28T or larger cassette

Models are "upwardly" compatible (that is, a given model will also work with the setups listed above it).
