Do Raleigh still care for my bike?
My heart was broken this evening. Alas, my poor old bike (a Raleigh Discovery, nearly twenty years old, lovely shire horse 501 frame, I rode it everywhere) is broken. As I prepared for my commute back home, I noticed the seat stays had come clean away from the frame.
Now, this may be a myth but I once heard Raleigh had a lifetime guarantee on their cycles. I'm under the belief that, if I can get the bike to Nottingham, they'll fix it for free.
Is this true? Do they still care for my bike?
Or is the Nottingham workshop no more?
Does anyone have a contact number for them?

Raleigh UK website lists a general phone contact number: 0 1773 532 600.

Thanks for that number. I had a look on the website myself and couldn't find any contact details at all!
The story I heard, was of man in a pub who was lamenting the passing of his bike. The chap next to him happened to be a Raleigh mechanic and told him that Raleigh bikes came with a life time guarantee. The bike was fixed within a week!
Anyway, fingers crossed.

Sorry to hear about your bike.
It shouldn't be too difficult for a quality welding shop to re-attach your seat-stays. Then have the old paint stripped, repaint, and give it a fresh lease on life.

Unfortunately, you have more chance of meeting Robin Hood in person than finding the Raleigh factory in Nottingham. The Raleigh story is a long and fascinating one, Sheldon has much information on his site. I have bought several used bikes from local classified ads and often the owner either worked there, or had family members who did - alas, no more. Nottingham employment is now based around call centres and retail. I guess that's just the way of the world.

If sentiment overcomes economics, any framebuilder could braze (not weld) the stays back on to where ever they detatched from. The cost of the repair and the necessary repaint will probably be more than the frame is worth unless you are truly in love with it.

Sorry to hear a much loved bike has hit the end of the road. I'm sure it could be fixed but at a cost far above the actual worth but sometimes sentimentality takes over. Good luck in seeing if you can get Raleigh to sort it. In my experience contact with Raleigh means they just refer you to the shop you bought the bike from.
Lots of Raleigh Pioneers come up on Ebay so that may be a solution.
