Pedals for 7 year old

Hello all,

I am new here. I am coming to you for advise. My son, who is 7, is going to be riding in his 2nd 300 mile in 5 days, ride this summer. Last year he just rode with his normal pedals, but I was constantly reminding him to move his feet on the pedals, so he was not pedaling with his heals or arches. I was thinking about pedal cages for him. Is he too young or is there a good alternative?

Tow clips come in sizes. The trick is finding them in size small.

We put toe clips on our triple last year to help keep the boys' feet in place. John just took some metal clips that we had out in the barn and cut off the part where the strap would go, then sanded it smooth. The result was a little clip that went over their toes, but that's it. It worked beautifully - that's what the boys uesd for the entire 9300 miles.

I used a set of Forté Campus Pedals for my grand kids these are Double sided design works with cleats or standard shoes. I also used a pair of Dimension Instep Pedal Inserts for the straps.
This gave me the option of flat pedals, pedals with clips or shoes with SPD style cleats.
Some photos are available for you to see on this page with my tandem project, scroll down to the pedals https://www.jtgraphics.net/tandem_bike_project.htm
Although I don't use them I also made as set to work with my Speedplay X2 pedels by molding is a set of X2 cleats on them also so if some one wants to ride my other bikes they can use the straps with street shoes.

I assume these are what you use to drag the kid around when he won't pedal.

+1 on that keeps his feet on the pedals, nothing worse than having a pedal come around hit you.
