Wheelbuilding: skipping holes?

Specifically, 32 hole hubs and 28 hole rims. (Hey, like you never had a brain fart. ) What's your verdict? I'm kind of new at building.

A) Tacky, but mechanically OK.

B) Mechanically iffy -- may need to true often or something.

C) For the love of God, man, DON'T DO IT!!

If feasible, how? Just point me to a thread or resource if that'll do. I do not see a mention in any of my materials.

(Answer's probably buried somewhere in Sheldon's site...)

I really think the best thing for you to do is sell or trade off the parts you don't want and get the right parts. Hubs and rims need to match. Of course you could do 32 spokes on the rear wheel and 28 on the front.

That setup doesn't sound like it would be reasonable, just based on the difference in holes. You need a hole difference that is wholly divisible by the total in both the rim and the hub (i.e. 24/36, 18/36, etc.)

For your setup, you need to skip 4 holes over 32, or every 8th on the rim. Will the lacing pattern allow this feasibly? ONce you start crossing spokes, it gets tricky fast.

I spent about an hour going through some spacing options in AutoCAD for an older 20-hole hub I have, and it is a PITA if you're not lacing the wheel radially.

All that said, I have seen some wheels that skip rim holes. I can't attest to their durability, but if you get the tension right, you should be okay, as long as you're not 250lbs riding on a 16-hole rear wheel and such.

Alrighty then: I'll look for matching parts! I can always use what I have now for some future project. Thanks.

(See, what happened is the 700c rims I have for another bike are 32 holes and I got confused... )
