Bar-end shifter cabe routing and DT shifter issue
I ended up getting a set of Campagnolo 10sp bar-end shifters and they came with some long Campagnolo cables...enough to route the cables and housing under the bar tape from the bar-end shifter plug all the way up to the flat portion of the bar by the stem clamp.
Anyone experience any issues with shifting by running such a long, contorted cable housing?
Also, even though I was intending on using the bar-end shifters as downtube shifters, I'm not sure I can do that...I need to get a shifter boss stop for both levers, otherwise the levers will spin 360degrees around.
Any suggestion for that?

Unfortunately I routed my cables the conventional way before I realized you could route the cables under the tape. Oh well, next time I guess.

hello
I've got my bar end shifters routed ergo style. Shifts perfectly fine. The only thing is that you may find the rear cable barely long enough in which case a slightly longer cable or a tandem cable may be required.

Even on a small 50cm frame, my RD inner wire came up about 4cm too short. Heading into the shop for a tandem cable in an hour or so.

We'll see if there is enough cable for it...I'm sure I can get a longer cable at the shop if I need to. This is all getting mounted on a 53cm frame.
well...I took the indexed (right side) shift lever off the bar-end pod and installed it on the boss...it kept spinning around....so I put it back on the bar-end pod.
Love those brake levers, roadfix.

I've done it on two 56cm bikes. I still had just enough cable to get the RD adjusted. I used the double ended cable, maybe that's a little longer.

On trick is to cross the cables under the downtube by running the right-side shifter cable to the left boss and vice versa. This greatly lessens how sharp you have to make the bend between where the cable housing exits under the tape down to the boss. This might allow you to cut the housing shorter or use a housing that would be too short otherwise.
This also lessens or elminates abrasion of the housing against the side of the head tube.
The cables may touch under the downtube but the angle is so oblique, it causes no problem or wear.

That's a good looking bike. My LHT has the shifter cables exiting straight from the bar bottoms and making a big loop out front, but the brake cables are done like like yours.
Here's mine:

I saw another alternate routing too, where the shifter cable runs under the tape up to the hood, then exits and loops back to the stops. I would have done it this way if I still had enough cable/housing length. It looks like it wouldn't get in the way if you did it right. Check it out:
Mine is sort of a compromise between the standard lowest friction Cascade 168 routing and carrying the housings in the bar tape all the way to the stem like The Fixer and Top506. Frankly, I was afraid to try routing the housings in the bar tape all the way to the stem.
Shifting is flawless.

I've routed the cables under the bartape on several different bikes/handlebars with no issue. So long as you don't use those cubist modolo handlebars you should be fine.
But isn't it time someone turned this into a barend vs sti thread? It's been a week or so and I feel it might be revisited. Maybe someone has some new important information to share.

This thread makes me wonder if I'd rather have indexed DT or indexed Bar ends instead of STI when if and when I upgrade my trek...

hello
If you take your coffee black, or ride a fixed gear, your next road bike upgrade should naturally be either bar end or down tube shifters.

DONE!
needs to be cleaned up so it will come apart again next weekend if I can get a stand at the shop for personal use, but ti is essentially all there and working.
