What is this?
Hey all,
The other day, on the way to work, this "thing" under my BB came loose and started tearing up my chain rings.... What the heck is it? The bike is a 94'-95' (best I can figure) TREK Multi-Track. Thanks

It's an anti chain suck device. Trek started mounting those on bikes (94 or 95, yes) right around the time that it was no longer a big problem due to changes in chain and chainring design. Even less of a problem on a hybrid bike. Feel free to remove it, but save it in case your bike is prone to chainsuck. You'll know it when it happens--the chain stays stuck to two rings at once after you shift the front derailleur, usually to the small ring.
